The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a critical public health alert warning Nigerians to avoid a recalled batch of Indomie Vegetable Flavour instant noodles after it was discovered to contain undeclared allergens that could pose serious health risks.

According to the agency, the alert was prompted by a recall notice released by French food safety authorities, Rappel Conso, after laboratory tests confirmed that the affected Indomie noodles contain milk and egg allergens that were not declared on the product label. NAFDAC emphasized that this omission violates food safety standards and places consumers, particularly those with food allergies or intolerances, at significant risk.

NAFDAC explained that undeclared allergens such as milk and eggs can trigger severe allergic reactions, including breathing difficulties, skin rashes, swelling, and other potentially life-threatening complications. The agency stressed that accurate and transparent food labelling is critical for consumer safety, especially for individuals who rely on ingredient lists to avoid harmful reactions.

While noting that Nigeria currently maintains a Federal Government ban on the importation of noodles, NAFDAC stated that the presence of the recalled Indomie product in the country cannot be completely ruled out. The agency warned that illegal importation routes, online shopping platforms, and international travellers could still allow the product to enter local markets.

In response to the alert, NAFDAC said it has intensified nationwide surveillance and monitoring activities to ensure that the recalled Indomie Vegetable Flavour noodles do not circulate within Nigeria. Food distributors, retailers, wholesalers, and other stakeholders in the supply chain have been directed to remain alert and refrain from selling or distributing any affected products.

The agency further strongly advised consumers who may already possess the recalled noodles not to consume them under any circumstances. Members of the public were encouraged to promptly report any sightings or suspected sales of the product to NAFDAC offices across the country to enable swift regulatory intervention.

NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that all food products available in Nigeria meet approved safety and labelling standards. The agency urged Nigerians to stay informed, read food labels carefully, and prioritize their health by avoiding any product flagged as unsafe.
