Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has once again shared her honest perspective on marriage, describing the institution as something society tends to over-glorify while overlooking its realities. Speaking during a recent interview on Naija FM Lagos, the actress explained that although she is not opposed to marriage, she is also not actively pursuing it.

At 42, Jegede said her outlook on relationships has evolved with experience, making her more cautious about societal expectations surrounding marriage. According to her, she has learned to stay open-minded without placing pressure on herself to remarry.

“I am open to remarriage if it comes, but I am not looking for it. I have learnt not to say ‘never’,” she said during the interview.

The actress went further to question why marriage is often treated as the ultimate goal, arguing that many relationships appear to function better before legal or societal labels are introduced. Drawing from her observations, she noted that couples who spent years together before marriage often struggle once they officially tie the knot.

“I think marriage is overrated. A lot of people who dated for 10 to 15 years got married and then broke up within two or three years,” she stated.

According to Jegede, the problem often lies in how tolerance changes once a relationship becomes a marriage. She believes the expectations and pressures attached to marriage can gradually erode patience and understanding between partners.

“Sometimes you wonder why such couples didn’t just remain unmarried. Because when they add the marriage tag, a lot of intolerance gets in the way,” she explained.

The actress stressed that emotional connection and companionship mean more to her than the social validation that comes with marriage. In her view, mutual respect, love, and peace of mind are far more important than a wedding ceremony or marital title.

“I think it is better to find who you love and just cohabit with them,” she added, making it clear that stability and happiness should take priority over tradition.

Jegede’s comments come years after her highly publicised marriage to fellow Nollywood actor Olakunle ‘Abounce’ Fawole ended. The union, which began in 2018, lasted less than a year before they parted ways in 2019. Since then, the actress has been open about the challenges she faced during that period.

In previous interviews, Jegede revealed that financial imbalance played a major role in the collapse of her marriage. She disclosed that she was largely responsible for the financial burden in the relationship, a situation that eventually took an emotional toll on her.

She has also spoken about feeling disrespected in the marriage and struggling with what she described as her former partner’s inability to manage the relationship effectively. According to her, these issues gradually chipped away at the foundation of the union.

Reflecting on that experience, Jegede admitted that choosing love over financial stability was a decision she later regretted. She explained that while emotions are important, financial responsibility and mutual respect are equally critical in sustaining a healthy partnership.

Her candid remarks have once again sparked conversations online about modern relationships, marriage expectations, and the pressures placed on women to conform to traditional timelines. Many listeners praised her honesty, while others debated her views on cohabitation and marriage.

For Jegede, however, the message remains simple: happiness, peace, and emotional well-being matter more than meeting societal standards. She continues to embrace life on her own terms, focusing on personal growth, career success, and meaningful connections rather than rushing into another marriage.
