World heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped death on Monday, December 29, following a tragic road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, around the Makun axis of Ogun State. The crash, which involved a sport utility vehicle travelling from Lagos to Sagamu, claimed the lives of two foreign nationals.

The Ogun State Government confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade. According to him, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Livewell Mortuary in Sagamu, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing. The government also extended condolences to the families and associates of the victims.

Joshua, who was reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the accident, survived the crash, adding his name to a long list of Nigerian celebrities who have escaped fatal road accidents over the years.

Below are some notable Nigerian entertainers and public figures who have survived similar life-threatening incidents:

Afropop singer Harrysong narrowly escaped death on June 24, 2016, when he and members of his team were involved in a road accident while travelling from Owerri to Lagos. He was on his way to perform at the opening gala of Project Fame Season 9 when the incident occurred.

Reflecting on the experience days later, the singer expressed gratitude for his life. He wrote:

Confirming the incident on Instagram, Burna Boy wrote:

“Yes, it’s true. I had a bad accident in my Ferrari today. My leg just hurts a little, but I’m fine. It’s just funny how everyone came with their phones recording me instead of trying to help. I guess they were too excited to see me regardless of the situation lol. But I love you all, Gambo got me.”

3. Dunsin Oyekan

Popular gospel singer Dunsin Oyekan survived a serious auto crash on September 3, 2022, while travelling from Lagos to Oyo State for a church ministration. One of his crew members reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Sharing his testimony during a church service later that day, the singer narrated how close the incident was.

“The devil tried everything not to make me come here today. If you saw the accident scene that I came out of, you would never believe that I walked out alive,” he said.

He added:

“To think we were coming here, and I said let me sleep a bit so that I can be refreshed… next thing I knew, the jeep had gone under a trailer. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, if you are looking for a miracle, this is a miracle standing here.”

4. Sensational Bamidele

Gospel singer Sensational Bamidele, leader of the band that often performs at Rivers State government events, also survived a horrific accident in December 2022.

Sharing the experience on Facebook, he revealed that the vehicle conveying members of his team had a head-on collision and somersaulted multiple times.

“He moves mountains, and He causes walls to fall. By His power, He performs miracles. And I am standing here only because He made it,” he wrote, expressing gratitude for survival.
