The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal road accident involving Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near the Sinoma area close to Sagamu, Ogun State.
In a statement issued by the Ogun Sector Command, the Corps disclosed that the crash happened at about 12:00 noon and involved a Lexus Jeep conveying the boxer and a stationary commercial truck. The incident was promptly reported, and FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes to carry out rescue operations, manage traffic, and prevent further accidents.
According to the statement, the vehicles involved were a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN and a red Sinotruck with an unknown registration number. Five adult males were said to be involved in the crash. Two victims lost their lives, one person sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and suffered only minor injuries.
The injured victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) was also informed to carry out further investigation and documentation.
FRSC said preliminary findings suggest that the Lexus Jeep was likely travelling above the approved speed limit and lost control while attempting to overtake, eventually crashing into the stationary truck that was properly parked by the roadside. The Corps identified “excessive speed and wrongful overtaking” as the main causes of the crash, noting that both remain among the leading contributors to fatal road accidents in Nigeria.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, on behalf of the management and staff of the FRSC, expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured, including Anthony Joshua, a quick recovery.
The statement warned motorists against reckless driving habits, especially on major highways such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. It urged road users to avoid dangerous overtaking, speeding, and disregard for traffic rules, stressing the need for patience, lane discipline, and prioritising safety, particularly during the festive travel season.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to safer highways through rapid emergency response, continuous public enlightenment, and sustained enforcement aimed at reducing road crashes and fatalities nationwide.
