Gunmen responsible for the deadly attack on two churches in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, have reportedly contacted the community, demanding a staggering ₦600 million ransom for the release of abducted worshippers.

The coordinated attack occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, when armed assailants stormed the First ECWA Church and the Apostolic Church during worship services. The assault threw the quiet Bunu community into chaos, leaving 37 worshippers kidnapped, including children and elderly individuals.

According to community sources, the attackers first reached out on December 15, insisting they wanted to negotiate directly with the government. By December 16, they issued a firm ultimatum, demanding ₦600 million from the families of the captives and warning of dire consequences if their demands were not met.

SaharaReporters learnt that the attack claimed the life of a seminary graduate, Pastor Jimoh Adeyemi, popularly known as JJ, while two other worshippers sustained serious injuries.

More disturbing is the demographic of those abducted. Over 12 children between the ages of three and eight, alongside more than 10 elderly worshippers aged above 70, were reportedly taken by the gunmen.

“The attackers, who surrounded the community, targeted worshippers at the churches, taking advantage of the peaceful gathering,” a community source said.

“While some churchgoers managed to hide inside the Apostolic Church, children who couldn't escape were abducted. Among the kidnapped victims were more than 10 elderly people who were over 70 years of age and over 12 children ranging from 3–8 years old.”

The source further revealed the shocking level of control wielded by the attackers during the operation.

“The bandits operated freely for hours, even forcing some captives to return home to collect ransom money before taking them away.”

Residents say the incident has sparked fear and outrage among the Bunu people, especially as the attack has been largely underreported and allegedly suppressed, despite its scale and brutality.

This tragic event marks the third attack on Aiyetoro Kiri in 2025, raising serious concerns about worsening insecurity, rural vulnerability, and the apparent absence of timely security intervention in the area.
