Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has been officially conferred with the traditional title “Olu Omo Eyo Oniko” as part of the lead-up to the 2025 Eyo Festival in Lagos. This recognition celebrates his contributions to Nigerian music and his commitment to preserving Yoruba culture.
After months of international touring, the award-winning singer returned to Nigeria for the festive season and participated in Lagos Island’s cultural celebrations. Asake was seen dancing with devotees in full Eyo regalia, accompanied by the rhythm of traditional drums — a moment that rapidly went viral across social media platforms.
Clad in the iconic white flowing attire symbolic of the Eyo masquerade, Asake successfully blended modern stardom with Yoruba heritage, eliciting cheers from spectators.
His appearances included visits to his alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile‑Ife, and a symbolic homecoming at the Ile‑Ife palace, where the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, welcomed him warmly and referred to him as “a son of the land.
In recognition of his global influence and loyalty to cultural roots, community leaders on Lagos Island formally bestowed upon him the title “Olu Omo Eyo Oniko”, an honour highlighting his connection to the Eyo tradition and his growing status as a cultural ambassador.
The Eyo Festival, also called the Adamu Orisha Play, is among Lagos’ most prestigious cultural events. Unique to Lagos Island, it is historically performed to escort the spirits of departed chiefs and notable figures.
The 2025 edition of the festival is taking place today, Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Tafawa Balewa Square, drawing large crowds eager to witness this rich display of Yoruba culture.
Asake’s recognition reinforces the intersection of Afrobeats music, Nigerian culture, and Yoruba traditions, ensuring that local heritage continues to thrive on global platforms.
