Abuja-based lawyer Adaobi Alagwu has firmly rejected claims by Tunde Ayeni, former chairman of the defunct Skye Bank Plc, that she is pursuing an out-of-court settlement in their ongoing legal battle.
In a statement released to TheCable on Sunday, Alagwu dismissed Ayeni’s assertions as “false, malicious, and entirely unfounded,” stressing that the narrative being circulated has no basis in fact.
Ayeni had earlier alleged, in a November 25 statement, that Alagwu reached out to his friends and associates to negotiate a private resolution. He warned them against entertaining such discussions and insisted that the case must proceed publicly to “restore his reputation.” The dispute stems from his denial of paternity of Alagwu’s daughter.
Alagwu, however, has categorically refuted the claims, maintaining that she has never initiated or authorised any form of settlement talks — directly or indirectly.
“My attention has been drawn to publications alleging that I have made overtures directly or indirectly towards an out-of-court settlement. This claim is entirely false,” she said.
“I have not initiated, authorised, encouraged, or pursued any form of settlement whether publicly or through so-called ‘back-door channels.’ No such conversation has ever taken place, and no individual has been appointed to speak on my behalf regarding settlement.
“These reports are a misrepresentation of the facts and should be disregarded. I will not be engaging further outside the appropriate legal channels.”
The paternity case between the two was previously struck out by the FCT customary court in Dawaki, which declined jurisdiction. Both parties are now before the FCT high court in Gwagwalada in a separate property-related matter.
The case, earlier slated for hearing on November 25, has been rescheduled to January 28, 2026, following the court’s inability to sit.
