A tense exchange has unfolded between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose after both men shared sharply worded messages in the aftermath of Fayose’s recent birthday celebration.
The incident became public through a statement issued in Abeokuta by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, who confirmed that the former President had received what Fayose termed a “thank you letter.” However, the message, delivered via SMS, quickly turned confrontational.
In the text sent to Obasanjo, Fayose acknowledged the elder statesman’s presence at his birthday gathering but heavily criticised comments Obasanjo reportedly made at the event. His message read partly: “Dear Baba Obasanjo, I trust this meets you well. Your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate except for your very irresponsible comments at your age. You went so low but am not surprised because someone once said you are supposed be kept away in the zoo. Sincerely thats where you belong.”
Fayose added that he chose to remain silent during the event to “let the world know the difference between a sane and a mad man that you are.” He did not hold back further, writing: “It is also obvious that you have also lost your sanity OR should I say is the heightened stage of dementia. Not to worry Baba., I shall set the records straight in due course of time. Lastly I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received but Dangote brought u back.”
He ended with the remark: “Your leopard will never change his skin.”
Obasanjo responded with a succinct but pointed message. According to Akinyemi’s statement, the former President replied: “Ayo, thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable. Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo who brought it and in the same bag as he brought it unopened by me. Obj.”
The back-and-forth has sparked widespread reactions due to the forceful language exchanged between two prominent political figures known for their turbulent relationship. The episode adds yet another chapter to the longstanding tension between the pair, drawing renewed public attention to their often unpredictable dynamic.
