Controversial Nigerian cleric, Odumeje, has sparked nationwide debate after strongly criticizing fellow pastors for what he described as their cowardly silence in the face of Nigeria’s worsening governance.
Speaking passionately during a recent church service, Odumeje accused many influential religious leaders of refusing to confront political leaders or condemn bad policies, despite the growing hardship faced by millions of citizens.
According to him, many pastors enjoy preferential political treatment, including police escorts, special security arrangements, and access to government benefits—advantages that ordinary church members never receive. Odumeje argued that any spiritual leader who benefits from the system but refuses to condemn injustice is deceiving the public.
He openly rebuked them, saying:
“Bad government they can never talk about it. Fake people. I don’t move by people, I follow you based on your spiritual attitude. And everyone who stands on the altar in this government, you must talk.”
The cleric further highlighted what he called blatant hypocrisy within the religious space. He alleged that pastors collect luxury packages and political favours, yet give struggling members nothing but symbolic items. In his fiery words:
“You guys are the ones causing it, giving pastors a lot, with police and Mopols to guard them. But they will give you olive oil and sticker and tell you to go home. You trek home, while he goes home with police.”
Odumeje also took aim at pastors who boast about spiritual power yet offer no real impact.
“One miracle you have never done in your church, but you’d be bragging that you are Bishop…taa. go and sit down.”
His remarks continue to trend online, as many Nigerians applaud him for speaking boldly, while others criticize his approach. Regardless, Odumeje’s outburst has reignited conversations about corruption in the church, pastoral accountability, and the role of religious leaders in Nigeria’s political climate.
