Panic swept through parts of Abuja on Sunday as anxious parents rushed to evacuate their children from the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Bwari, following rising fears over insecurity in the area. Videos and eyewitness accounts showed distressed parents arriving at the school in large numbers, demanding to immediately take their daughters home to safety.

The tense situation has once again drawn national attention to the worsening security challenges in Nigeria, especially in the Federal Capital Territory, which was previously regarded as one of the safest zones in the country.

This latest incident comes amid recurring attacks, kidnappings, and banditry across various states, all of which have heightened public anxiety. Over the past months, several communities in Abuja suburbs—including Bwari, Kwali, Kuje, and Gwagwalada—have experienced increased criminal activity.

Reports of suspected bandits infiltrating remote areas have led many residents to fear that schools, especially boarding schools, may be targeted. For many parents, the memories of past school abductions in Chibok, Dapchi, Kankara, and Kaduna remain fresh, intensifying the urgency to protect their children from any potential threat.

Residents of Bwari have repeatedly raised concerns about the presence of armed groups operating within the surrounding hills and forests. Despite assurances from security agencies, parents argue that the preventive measures in schools remain inadequate.

According to some parents, the fear is not only about direct attacks but also about the government’s delayed responses in previous incidents, which often resulted in prolonged captivity of abducted students.

The nationwide climate of insecurity—ranging from terrorism and banditry to farmer-herder conflicts and urban kidnappings—has continued to erode public confidence. Analysts warn that as long as these threats persist, schools, students, and rural communities will continue to remain vulnerable.

The chaotic evacuation at FGGC Bwari has now become a symbol of growing frustration, fear, and the urgent demand for a more effective security architecture. Parents are calling for immediate government intervention, increased military presence, and concrete action to restore safety in schools across Nigeria.
