Jamaican dancehall superstar Sean Paul has spoken emotionally about the recent hurricane that battered parts of Jamaica, describing it as one of the most frightening moments of his life and a traumatic experience for his family.

In a recent chat with BBC News, the Grammy-winning musician revealed that the storm left a lasting emotional mark, particularly on his two young children who had never seen such violent weather before.

“It was very frightening, especially for my young kids. That’s the first time they’ve seen trees dance like that and the wind move like that,” Sean Paul recalled. “They’re in shock still and traumatised. And can you imagine the children who were in the epicentre of it? It feels like you’re in the Middle Ages.”

The dancehall icon said that even though Kingston, where he resides, was not the hardest-hit area, the storm’s intensity left residents terrified. “It is really difficult to bear. We weren’t hit in Kingston very hard, but it was frightening,” he explained. “You’re wondering, at any minute now, is there going to be, you know, some tree that comes along and slaps your roof off?”

While his family escaped the worst damage, Sean Paul shared that some of his close friends in Montego Bay were not as fortunate. “That happened to friends of mine in Montego Bay. They’ve lost their whole roof, and they’re still in the trenches helping people there, making sure that food reaches and clothes reach [people],” he said.

The singer, known for hits like Temperature and Get Busy, admitted that the emotional strain of witnessing widespread destruction and coordinating relief efforts eventually became overwhelming. “Everybody’s stuff is all muddied up, and it’s hard to think about something positive at this time,” he confessed. “After days and days of communication and trying to help out in different ways, on Saturday I broke down.”

Sean Paul expressed deep empathy for families who lost everything, saying that his thoughts remain with those struggling to rebuild their lives. He acknowledged that while natural disasters are part of island life, the scale of devastation this time was difficult to process.

Despite the heartbreak, the singer is channeling his energy into supporting recovery efforts. He announced plans to donate generously to families whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed by the hurricane, stressing that Jamaica’s strength lies in its people’s unity and compassion.

“This is the time we need to stand together and help one another,” he said. “It’s painful, but Jamaicans are resilient. We’ll rise again.”
