The entertainment industry is known for its high-pressure environment, where creativity meets tight deadlines, long hours, and strong personalities. While disagreements are part of the process, Nollywood has recently witnessed a series of alarming physical confrontations on film sets, prompting urgent discussions about safety, professionalism, and mental health.
Peggy Ovire and Taye Arimoro Clash
One of the most widely discussed disputes involved actress Peggy Ovire and actor Taye Arimoro. The incident gained attention after Arimoro shared videos showing injuries, claiming they resulted from an altercation with Ovire and her team.
According to Arimoro, the conflict started when he tried to leave the set at the end of his contracted hours, only to be confronted aggressively. CCTV footage circulated online appeared to show Ovire’s team blocking his car, while Arimoro livestreamed part of the encounter, stating he simply wanted to finish his day peacefully.
Ovire, however, disputed this account, insisting that Arimoro assaulted two of her crew members and left before completing his final scenes. She explained that the production manager requested he give the team 30 more minutes to wrap up the remaining scenes, which led to the escalation. Ovire’s driver reportedly intervened by blocking Arimoro’s car, further intensifying the standoff.
The confrontation sparked widespread discussion online, with many calling for independent reviews and urging producers to implement stricter protocols to protect crew members and ensure actors meet their contractual obligations.
Anierobi “Nwa South” Courage and Mary Eze Incident
Another shocking episode occurred in October 2025 when Nollywood production manager Anierobi Courage, known as Nwa South, was arrested following an alleged assault on lead makeup artist Mary Eze during the filming of Lagos to Opulence.
Viral footage captured Courage physically grabbing Eze by the neck while exchanging heated words. The Nigerian Film Crew Community condemned his actions, describing them as “animalistic behaviour” and highlighting the risks faced by behind-the-scenes staff who operate under high-pressure conditions.
The NFCC confirmed that the assault followed Eze speaking out against unequal treatment on set. Courage’s arrest prompted calls from industry bodies to blacklist him from future productions and sparked renewed advocacy for crew welfare, especially for makeup artists and continuity teams.
Femi Branch Confronts Assistant Director
Veteran actor Femi Branch also made headlines after allegedly assaulting a first assistant director during a shoot in June 2025. Eyewitnesses reported that the conflict stemmed from a disagreement over creative direction, with Branch reportedly becoming aggressive when given instructions.
A video surfaced showing Branch trying to leave the set while being restrained by crew members. The Film Crew Community later released a statement noting that the actor had apologized, commending the crew for maintaining professionalism and standing against on-set violence.
Zubby Michael and Godwin Nnadikwe Dispute
Popular actor Zubby Michael faced criticism after fellow actor Godwin Nnadikwe claimed he was hospitalized following a forceful kick during filming, which was neither scripted nor directed. Nnadikwe said he had to seek medical care independently, highlighting the lack of on-set insurance and first-aid support.
He used social media to emphasize the importance of adhering to scripts and maintaining a safe working environment, urging colleagues to prioritize mutual respect and safety.
Shirley Igwe Suspended by AGN
Earlier in the year, the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN) suspended actress Shirley Igwe indefinitely after she allegedly assaulted a crew member in Lagos. The suspension, communicated through a letter signed by AGN president Emeka Rollas, cited “professional misconduct, violence, and indiscipline” and directed guild members to avoid participating in productions involving her.
The move elicited mixed reactions, with some industry professionals supporting the AGN’s firm stance, while others argued that a complete investigation had not yet been conducted.
