Veteran Yoruba actor Ebun Oloyede, widely known by his stage name Olaiya Igwe, has revealed the real reason he turned down a request from gospel singer Tope Alabi and her husband to borrow his car for their wedding ceremony many years ago.
The seasoned actor made this revelation during the gospel star’s 55th birthday celebration, noting that his decision at the time was not out of ill will but rather driven by fear and trauma from a previous incident.
Recounting the experience, Olaiya Igwe explained that the situation occurred shortly after he had purchased a Mercedes-Benz V-Boot, which he proudly nicknamed “Ololade Mr Money 1” — a name inspired by the success of one of his movies.
According to him, Tope Alabi, who was preparing for her wedding, had visited him to inform him of the big event and requested to use the newly acquired car for the occasion. Initially, Olaiya agreed to lend it to her, but later that night, he began to have second thoughts.
“She informed me about her wedding, and I had just bought a car. But after she left, I had a second thought: what if armed robbers snatched the car from them?” he said, recalling the worry that consumed him at the time.
The actor explained that his hesitation was rooted in a previous traumatic experience involving the same car. While promoting one of his films in Ibadan, he was ambushed, and the vehicle was stolen by robbers. Although he eventually recovered it, the incident left him shaken and overly cautious about parting with the car again.
Olaiya revealed that as the wedding day drew near, his fear grew stronger. He admitted that a day before the ceremony, he stopped taking Tope Alabi’s calls and eventually failed to honor his promise to lend her the car.
“A day before the wedding, I stopped picking Tope’s calls. I didn’t give her the car. I disappointed Tope Alabi. It wasn’t out of malice but fear of losing what I had just acquired,” he confessed.
The actor noted that his actions have weighed heavily on his conscience for years, emphasizing that his refusal was purely emotional and not a result of animosity toward the singer. He further mentioned that he has since apologized to Tope Alabi for his actions, though the guilt still lingers.
Over time, both stars have maintained mutual respect for each other, with Olaiya describing Tope Alabi as a gifted and humble artist who has continued to make Nigeria proud through her gospel music career.
Meanwhile, the gospel singer’s 55th birthday celebration was filled with surprises and emotional moments. Her husband, Soji Alabi, presented her with a brand-new Lexus SUV as a special gift, an act that moved the celebrant and her fans alike.
The event also brought together several gospel and Nollywood personalities, who gathered to celebrate Tope’s contributions to music and her decades-long journey of inspiring faith through song.
Olaiya’s heartfelt confession added a nostalgic yet emotional layer to the celebration, reminding many of how human fear and experience can shape decisions — even those made with the best intentions.
