James Omokwe’s award-winning film, Osamede, is set to expand its reach internationally with screenings in select cinemas across the United Kingdom and the United States from November 28.
The Benin-set epic, produced by Lilian Olubi, recently won Best Narrative Feature at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival, cementing its status as one of Nollywood’s most culturally significant films of the year.
Originally conceived as a stage production, Osamede evolved into a full-scale feature blending history, mythology, and Edo cosmology.
Written by Lolo Eremie, the film tells the story of a young orphan navigating her destiny during the tumultuous period surrounding the 1897 invasion of the Benin Kingdom.
By combining historical drama with supernatural elements, the film reclaims an important chapter of West African history through a distinctly local perspective.
The cast is led by Ivie Okujaye, whose performance has drawn critical acclaim, alongside William Benson, Lexan Aisosa Peters, Tosin Adeyemi, Etinosa Idemudia, Paul Obazele, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen, and Alexander Bud.
In the United Kingdom, screenings will take place in Greenwich, Streatham, Milton Keynes, Manchester Great Northern, and Birmingham, while U.S. audiences can see the film in Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Maryland, and Indianapolis.
Osamede’s expansion into international cinemas underscores Nollywood’s growing influence in global film markets, particularly for epics that foreground indigenous history, local languages, and female-centered narratives.
The film exemplifies the increasing confidence of Nigerian filmmakers in producing stories capable of appealing to audiences beyond Africa, while also celebrating cultural authenticity and historical depth.
As Nollywood continues to diversify and gain recognition on the global stage, Osamede serves as a testament to the industry’s potential to create compelling stories that resonate internationally, bridging culture, history, and fantasy in ways that are uniquely African.
