A man has become the subject of online discussion after reportedly denying his wife during a live concert in Brazil just to share a moment with Nigerian singer Tems. The surprising incident took place over the weekend at the Afro Punk Festival, where Tems was one of the headline performers.
In a viral clip from the event, Tems was seen interacting with fans as part of her performance when she approached a man standing in the crowd. She appeared ready to serenade him but paused after noticing a woman, believed to be his wife, standing behind him.
In the video, Tems could be heard saying, “I know your wife is here and I need to respect her,” showing her intent not to cross any boundaries with a married fan. However, things took an unexpected turn when the man denied being married despite the woman’s visible presence right behind him.
Reports from concertgoers suggest that the singer hesitated for a moment, seemingly caught off guard by the man’s denial. Tems, known for her sultry stage presence and soulful voice, decided to maintain a respectful distance. Yet, the man boldly stretched out his hand, prompting Tems to respond with a polite gesture. He then kissed her hand, an act that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
The audience erupted in loud cheers as the man’s wife reportedly looked stunned by the interaction. Clips of the scene quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking heated reactions among fans and critics alike. While some viewers found the moment humorous, others condemned the man’s behavior as disrespectful to his wife.
Many online users debated the growing trend of Afrobeats artists serenading fans and their partners during live performances, questioning whether it crosses personal boundaries. Some fans defended the artist, noting that Tems acted respectfully and even tried to avoid causing tension by acknowledging the wife’s presence before proceeding.
One social media user commented, “Tems handled that situation perfectly. She respected the wife, but the man clearly had no respect for his marriage.” Another wrote, “This is getting out of hand. Why do people embarrass their partners at concerts just to get attention from celebrities?”
This incident has reignited a broader conversation that first began earlier in the year when Afrobeats star Omah Lay was criticized for a similar situation. In February 2024, Omah Lay invited a female fan to join him on stage during his concert at the Eventim Apollo in London while performing his hit song ‘Bend You’.
Videos from that show captured the silhouettes of Omah Lay and the fan in a suggestive moment, which quickly went viral online. The woman’s boyfriend was said to have been present at the concert, and reports later claimed that the couple broke up following the incident.
As the debate continues, the recent encounter with Tems has once again brought attention to the delicate line between fan engagement and personal boundaries, raising questions about how far artists and their admirers should go during live performances.
