Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Kunle Afod, has stirred emotions online after sharing a heartbreaking video of veteran Nigerian musician Innocent Onyebuchi, popularly known as Daddy Fresh, who is currently battling a severe illness.
In a Facebook video posted on Wednesday, Afod visited the ailing singer at a hospital where he has been bedridden for years.
The emotional clip showed Daddy Fresh lying weakly on a hospital bed, barely able to recognize the actor. When he saw Afod, he managed to whisper faintly, “Oba.” Afod quickly responded, “It’s Afod, Kunle Afod.” The musician, visibly shocked, asked if it was real and expressed relief at seeing the actor.
Speaking about his health, Daddy Fresh revealed he has been bedridden for more than two and a half years, enduring a series of medical challenges.
According to him, the illness has not only drained his finances but also caused him to experience hallucinations and physical weakness. He detailed his condition, explaining that he currently suffers from kidney and liver complications, neuropathy, and poor vision.
“My blood is very low, 25%, and I need immediate blood transfusions, two or three packs,” he said weakly. “If I try to stand, I will fall unless someone supports me. See my face, my knees, my wounds from falling like a child learning to walk.”
The once-vibrant musician further disclosed that he is on the verge of being evicted from his apartment due to unpaid rent. Despite his health struggles, he said he has been making efforts to raise funds to avoid being thrown out of his home.
Amid tears, Daddy Fresh lamented that his illness might not be ordinary, expressing his belief that “unseen enemies” could be behind his prolonged suffering. However, he admitted that Afod’s unexpected visit gave him renewed hope and comfort.
Kunle Afod, moved by the musician’s condition, offered him some financial assistance and called on Nigerians to rally around the once-celebrated artist. In an emotional appeal, he urged fans, colleagues, and well-meaning Nigerians to come to Daddy Fresh’s aid, both financially and morally.
“This is Daddy Fresh. If you know him, you know what I’m talking about. He has been down with sickness for over three years. I decided to visit him in the hospital. Nigerians, entertainers, we need your support. Let’s keep him alive. I met him in a very, very bad state,” Afod pleaded.
Daddy Fresh, one of Nigeria’s influential voices in the early days of contemporary music, is known for hit tracks that helped define the country’s sound in the 1990s. His current health challenges have, however, left him struggling to survive, relying on goodwill and the compassion of fans and colleagues.
Afod’s visit has since sparked a wave of concern and sympathy across social media, as fans and entertainers continue to share prayers and donations to help restore Daddy Fresh’s health.
