Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, has opened up about his ongoing spiritual journey, revealing that he left Christianity for Islam in his search for truth and deeper understanding of life.
In a recent interview with popular streamer Playboymax, the “City Boys” crooner spoke candidly about his religious experiences and how his personal quest for knowledge led him to explore multiple faiths.
“Growing up, I was a Christian and then I converted to Islam. It’s like I’ve studied it all, but I’m still out here trying to find out what is really going on. The more I research, the more confused I get,” Burna Boy said.
The award-winning artist, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, explained that his spiritual curiosity stems from a desire to connect with the truth beyond traditional teachings. According to him, religion should be more about personal conviction than societal expectations.
“I’ve read religious texts and spoken to different people of faith, but I still feel there’s something deeper that I’m missing,” he added. “I’m not trying to disrespect anyone’s belief, but I just want to understand what this life is truly about.”
Burna Boy’s revelation has sparked mixed reactions among fans and social media users. While some applauded his openness and honesty, others expressed surprise, given his previous public references to Christian values in his songs and interviews.
This isn’t the first time the singer has spoken about his complex relationship with religion. Over the years, Burna Boy has often used his music to question societal norms, colonial influence, and human spirituality. Songs like “Spiritual,” “Destiny,” and “Common Person” subtly reflect his evolving thoughts about faith, purpose, and the meaning of life.
He noted that his current journey is not about abandoning God but rather an attempt to find clarity and peace within himself. “At the end of the day, I just want to be real with myself and with God,” he stated.
The “Last Last” hitmaker also acknowledged that fame and success have exposed him to various philosophies and cultures around the world, influencing his understanding of spirituality.
“When you travel and see how people worship differently, it makes you realize that maybe truth is bigger than one religion,” he said.
Many fans have since taken to social media to show support for the singer’s openness, describing him as brave for discussing such a personal and sensitive topic. A few others, however, urged him to seek guidance from religious scholars to aid his search for truth.
As Burna Boy continues to navigate his spiritual path, he says he remains grounded in gratitude and self-awareness.
“I might not have all the answers right now, but I’m still learning. I believe the truth will reveal itself to me eventually,” he said.
With his statement now sparking nationwide discussion, Burna Boy once again proves that he is not just a musician but a thinker unafraid to confront life’s biggest questions even when they lead him down uncertain paths.
