Nollywood actor Ibrahim Chatta has again made headlines after revelations about his pay rate surfaced online, stirring conversations within the Nigerian film industry.

According to veteran actor Mustapha Bakare Otolo, Chatta currently stands as the highest-paid actor in Nollywood, reportedly charging as much as ₦5 million per movie role.

Otolo made this revelation during a trending online interview where he discussed the growing financial disparity between older and younger actors in the industry.

He explained that while many veteran actors still earn between ₦250,000 and ₦300,000 for a movie role, some of the younger and more commercially successful stars like Chatta now demand millions.

In the viral clip, Otolo said, “If Ibrahim Chatta appears on a movie set, he has been paid ₦5 million. That’s the amount he currently charges. He is the highest-paid actor presently. So, my point is that he can do up to 20 jobs in a month. I brought him to my movie, ‘Jigi,’ which was shot recently in Ogbomoso.”

He added that this pay gap has made it challenging for veteran actors to produce cinema-standard films, given the rising cost of hiring top-tier performers.

“You can’t compare him and other young actors to some of us who are being paid between ₦250,000 and ₦300,000 and appear in just one or two films in a month. That’s why it’s difficult for some of us veterans to produce cinema movies,” Otolo stated.

The revelation has sparked mixed reactions among Nollywood fans and industry observers. Some commended Chatta’s growth, talent, and dedication over the years, saying his fee reflects the value he brings to every production.

Others, however, raised concerns about the widening financial inequality in Nollywood, noting that while a few actors command huge sums, many experienced veterans still struggle financially.

Ibrahim Chatta, known for his versatility and compelling performances in both Yoruba and English-language films, has built a strong reputation as one of Nollywood’s most consistent and bankable stars.

His roles in movies such as Anikulapo: The Rise of the Sceptre, Alaanu Mi, and Olokiki Oru have earned him critical acclaim and a massive fan base.

Despite his success, Chatta has faced several controversies and personal struggles over the years. He has previously made headlines for losing a child and has been vocal about his grievances with award organizers, notably the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), accusing them of overlooking his work.

In a past interview, the actor stated, “I am not interested in AMVCA. I have been doing movies that touch lives, and I don’t need any award to validate my talent.”

Meanwhile, Otolo’s comments have reopened conversations about the need for better structures within Nollywood to ensure that both upcoming and veteran actors are fairly compensated.

As the industry continues to grow and attract global attention, many believe that balancing creativity with fair remuneration remains key to sustaining its progress.
