Afropop star Yemi Alade has revealed that she once battled smoking addiction during her university days, describing how the habit briefly took control of her lifestyle before she made the firm decision to quit.

Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the singer opened up about experimenting with smoking as a teenager, which eventually became a nightly routine. She admitted that what began as a casual indulgence soon developed into a growing dependency that she struggled to control.

“In the university, I tried smoking. At first, it was just curiosity, but before I knew it, it became something I needed to do before going to bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle,” she revealed.

Yemi Alade explained that the constant need to hide her smoking habit from the public played a major role in her decision to stop. According to her, the secrecy surrounding it made her uncomfortable and conflicted, especially because it didn’t align with her values.

“I realized it didn’t make sense that I would have to hide to do something. If I can’t do something openly, then maybe it’s not right for me,” she said, emphasizing the self-awareness that helped her break free from the addiction.

The “Johnny” crooner further revealed that smoking began to harm her voice  her greatest career asset  which convinced her to quit for good.

“It affected my voice, and I depend on my voice to make music. That was a wake-up call. Smoking for me did not even last up to a year before I stopped,” she admitted.

Yemi also touched on the emotional challenges she faced during that period, noting that the pressures of youth and trying to navigate independence influenced many of her early decisions. Her experience, she said, taught her the importance of self-discipline and making conscious choices.

Fans have praised the singer for her honesty and courage in sharing her story, noting that her openness could inspire others struggling with similar habits.

Yemi Alade has since built a thriving global music career, becoming one of Africa’s most recognized female performers. Known for her powerhouse vocals, energetic stage performances, and advocacy for African culture, she continues to inspire millions across the continent and beyond.

Her confession sheds light on the challenges many young people face while trying to discover themselves, reminding fans that even successful celebrities go through personal battles before finding clarity and purpose.
