Popular Nigerian singer, Tiwa Savage, has opened up about one of the toughest challenges faced by women in the country’s entertainment industry, revealing that she once lost a major endorsement deal because she refused to submit to sexual demands from a company executive.

The award-winning artiste made the disclosure while speaking at a panel session during Entertainment Week Africa, where she discussed the pressures and exploitation female performers often encounter in the music space.

Savage explained that although many people assume female artistes only need talent and hard work to advance, the reality is that most women are confronted with powerful figures who demand sexual favours in exchange for career opportunities.

According to her, it is not uncommon for influential male executives to insist on private meetings or personal visits before female artistes can be considered for shows, brand partnerships, or industry recognition.

Recalling some of her own encounters, the ‘Somebody’s Son’ singer said she had been told on several occasions that unless she met certain industry “chairmen” privately, she would not be included in high-profile events.

She narrated that there were times she was advised to visit these powerful individuals to secure slots that male colleagues often received based solely on merit and popularity.

Tiwa Savage also shared a more personal story about an endorsement deal she lost after declining an inappropriate request. She revealed that one of the co-owners of a company offering her a lucrative brand partnership insisted she travel with him to Dubai.

When she refused, the deal was abruptly withdrawn. That experience, she noted, opened her eyes to how some executives valued her physical appearance more than her artistry.

According to Savage, the situation was particularly painful because she had previously leaned into a brand image that highlighted her beauty and glamour, believing it was simply part of the showbiz world.

However, she later realised that the very image she embraced for branding purposes was being used as justification for exploitation. Instead of appreciating her musical achievements, some executives reduced her worth to her body and what they could gain from it personally.

“It was at that moment I understood that they didn’t rate my talent. They didn’t even care about the work I had put in,” she said, adding that the ordeal forced her to rethink how women are perceived in the entertainment industry.

She expressed disappointment that despite her global success, some people still viewed her through a narrow and objectifying lens.

Savage stressed that her experience is not isolated, as many female artistes face similar pressure but are often reluctant to speak out due to fear of losing opportunities or being blacklisted.

She described the situation as one of the major barriers preventing women from advancing on equal footing with men in the Nigerian music industry.

The singer called for a cultural shift within the industry, urging stakeholders to prioritise professionalism and respect. She noted that change would require bold conversations, accountability, and support systems that allow women to thrive without compromising their dignity.

Savage’s revelation has since sparked discussions about gender inequality, exploitation, and the urgent need to protect women in the entertainment space.
