Popular Nigerian singer, Aituaje Iruobe, better known by her stage name Waje, has stirred social media with her bold and unapologetic views about relationships, money, and marriage.
The award-winning vocalist, who has remained one of Nigeria’s most respected female artists for over a decade, revealed during an interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast that she cannot marry or date a man who is not financially stable.
The 45-year-old mother of one made her stance clear, emphasizing that at her age, she is past the stage of “building” with a man who is still struggling to find his footing in life.

“I can’t marry someone who is not successful, and here’s why: first of all, I’m not in my 20s so we are not growing together,” Waje stated confidently.
“A man leads, he leads by selling aspirations to me. I have to aspire to see him lead. And if he can’t inspire me to grow, we can’t be partners. So, success is part of it. Faith and emotional intelligence are also part of it.”

But Waje defended her perspective, stressing that her statement comes from a place of self-awareness and emotional maturity rather than superficial expectations.

According to her, such relationships often come with challenges she is unwilling to entertain. “We will have issues.
I’m very pragmatic. Sometimes, I have to hold myself with my siblings, my friends, and my family members. Imagine if it was a husband? He would get tired. I will be treating him like my child. He would hate me,” she said.
Waje, who has built a remarkable career since rising to fame with her powerful vocals and collaborations with the likes of P-Square and M.I Abaga, said she now understands her worth and what she deserves in a relationship.
She noted that compatibility, leadership, and mutual respect are key factors for her, but financial independence is equally essential.
