Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said he considers himself the highest-ranking Christian in the Nigerian government, attributing his political journey to what he called God’s “special grace.”
He made the remarks on Saturday during the dedication and opening of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, an event attended by prominent clerics, politicians and community leaders.
Akpabio’s comments were shared in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom. Reflecting on his progression from modest beginnings to becoming the country’s number-three citizen, he described his trajectory as evidence of divine intervention.
“As the most ranked Christian in government, God has specially and graciously transformed and prepared me for the task ahead,” he said, noting that although he associates with all denominations, he takes pride in being Catholic. He added, “If God can raise me from a nobody to be the President of the Senate… He can do it for us all.”
Akpabio urged Nigerians to stay committed to the work of the church, stressing that even the smallest offering counts. “Anytime you contribute as little as 10 kobo to the construction of a church building project… know that God has accepted your contributions,” he said, explaining why he is always eager to support church development.
He also disclosed that a new worship centre will soon be unveiled within the National Assembly complex in Abuja. “In the next few weeks, I will… invite Nigerians to join us in commissioning a befitting place of worship,” he announced.
During the ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev John Ayah, commended Akpabio and his wife, Dr Unoma Akpabio, for their consistent support of the church, referencing their hospitality toward Catholic bishops who visited Ikot Ekpene last September. The Bishop advised the Senate President to ignore critics, saying, “You are important and that is why they talk about you.”
Akpabio’s comments also come amid heightened discussion over Senate stability. Recently, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele dismissed rumours of leadership plots against Akpabio, calling such claims “unfounded.” This followed earlier revelations by former Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu, who noted that previous attempts by some lawmakers to unseat Akpabio had failed after senior senators intervened.
Bamidele has since urged members of the upper chamber to focus on unity rather than political manoeuvring, insisting there is no plan—whether in the past or ongoing—to remove the Senate President.
