Fuji music legend Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere was reportedly attacked by suspected thugs during a burial ceremony in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident occurred on Friday at the Government Field, Okitipupa, where Obesere and his band were scheduled to perform.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of men stormed the venue and launched an attack on the singer and his crew. One of Obesere’s band members was allegedly stabbed while trying to defend the team.
The sudden attack caused panic among the attendees, forcing many to flee for safety. Bosede Akinyemi, a guest at the ceremony, described the scene as chaotic and disgraceful. She recounted, “I was at the party.
It was a very shameful act as a group of boys known thugs in the community caused trouble. They attacked Obesere and his band while they were performing. They descended on some of his boys and destroyed his musical equipment.”
The violent incident disrupted the ceremony and left attendees in shock. Reports suggest that the thugs specifically targeted Obesere and his team, destroying musical equipment and attacking staff in the process.
The motive behind the assault remains unclear, though local authorities have vowed to investigate the matter thoroughly.
In response to the attack, the Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government Area, Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin, condemned the act, calling it unfortunate and unacceptable.
He said, “I received the news of the unfortunate mistreatment meted out to Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere and his team at the Government Field, Okitipupa, with deep disappointment and utmost distaste. This incident is unacceptable and does not reflect the values we uphold as a people.”
Ogunsakin further assured that measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. “I will be personally reaching out to Obesere and his team to set the record straight and convey our regrets over the incident.
I am also looking into the matter thoroughly to ensure such an incident does not repeat itself,” he added.
Obesere, who has long been regarded as one of Nigeria’s most iconic Fuji musicians, has faced numerous challenges during his decades-long career, but this recent attack marks one of the more disturbing episodes in his public life.
Fans and music lovers have since expressed concern over the safety of performers at public events, emphasizing the need for better security arrangements to prevent similar occurrences.
The incident has sparked conversations on social media about the safety of artists during live performances, particularly in local communities where events may not always be adequately secured.
Residents and stakeholders have called for urgent measures to safeguard musicians and ensure that cultural and entertainment events can proceed without violence.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Obesere’s fans and supporters hope for the full recovery of the injured band member and that the musician can resume performing safely in the future.
The attack has reignited debates over local security and the protection of entertainers during public events, highlighting a growing concern in Ondo State and other parts of the country.
