The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will feature 16 teams instead of 12, starting from the 2026 edition to be hosted by Morocco between March 17 and April 3, 2026.
In a statement released on Wednesday through its official website, CAF said the move aligns with its broader strategy to improve competition levels and promote the sustained development of women’s football across Africa.
Since the qualifying campaign for the 2026 tournament has already ended, CAF’s Executive Committee adopted a new process to decide the remaining four participants to complete the 16-team format.
“Based on the current FIFA Women’s World Rankings, the top four teams from those eliminated in the final qualifying round have been selected to complete the list of participants,” the football body stated.
Following this decision, Cameroon (ranked 66th by FIFA), Côte d’Ivoire (71st), Mali (79th), and Egypt (95th) have been added to the lineup of already qualified nations. The 12 teams previously confirmed include Morocco (hosts), Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Cape Verde, South Africa, and Senegal.
CAF noted that the expansion would allow more African nations to showcase their talent on the continental stage while giving women’s football greater exposure internationally.
The governing body added that the upcoming 2026 Women’s AFCON would also act as the African qualification tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled to hold in Brazil.
