The Chairman of the Association of Movie Producers, Federal Capital Territory Chapter (AMP-FCT), Desmond Utomwen, has been invited to serve as moderator for a major session at the 22nd Abuja International Film Festival (AIFF), slated to take place from November 6 to 10, 2025.

In a letter signed by AIFF founder Fidelis Duker, Utomwen was officially named the moderator for the panel discussion titled “The Power of Cinematic Storytelling in a Globalized World,” which is scheduled for November 7.

According to the organisers, “This session will explore how screenwriters and storytellers use film to explore, challenge, and define a nation’s identity and also interrogate the unique responsibility of the screenwriter in a country’s evolving social landscape.”

The letter further noted that Utomwen’s experience and perspective would add immense value to the festival’s discourse. “Your deep knowledge would be invaluable to our discussions and would greatly benefit our attendees, who include policymakers, filmmakers, producers, and students,” it stated.

Organisers described his inclusion as a major highlight of this year’s edition, adding, “We would be honoured to have you share your insights and engage in a thought-provoking conversation with fellow industry experts. We believe your participation will be a highlight of this year’s festival.”

Reputed as West Africa’s longest-running film festival, the AIFF has for over two decades promoted cinematic excellence, cultural exchange, and professional networking. This year’s edition will be held at the Silverbird Cinema, Central Area, Abuja.

Desmond Utomwen, a media entrepreneur and CEO of FreshNEWS Multimedia Group, is a seasoned filmmaker with several productions to his credit.

He is also the founder of the SDGs Film Challenge and Award, an initiative jointly organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) and the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC). The initiative aims to drive awareness and advocacy for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through film.

Now in its third year, the SDGs Film Challenge encourages filmmakers to submit entries that spotlight issues related to sustainable development, with a grand prize of ₦1 million for the winning entry.
