Nigerian actor Emeka Okoye has opened up about the challenges he has faced in Nollywood due to his body size, alleging that producers have denied him roles because he was deemed either “too slim” or “too fat.”

Okoye shared his experiences during a recent interview with Seun Oloketuyi on Nollywood On Radio, offering a candid insight into the struggles of actors navigating typecasting and physical expectations in the industry.

“I’ve been told that I am fat, and I have lost movie roles because of that. Some say that I won’t fit a character because I have a stomach or I’m not fine,” Okoye said. He explained that the discrimination is not limited to his current physique but has been a consistent challenge throughout his career.

The actor recounted that even in his younger, slimmer days, opportunities were limited. “But even when I was younger and slimmer, I still didn’t get roles. When I was slim, a lot of producers would use me to audition people and give them scripts, and they would say I was good but they didn’t have a role that fit me because I was too slim,” he revealed. This experience, he noted, was repeated multiple times, leaving him frustrated and questioning the standards being applied in casting decisions.

Okoye also mentioned that industry peers, including actress Bukky Thomas, can attest to his experiences. He added that as his body changed over the years, the types of roles offered to him also shifted. “And now that I am a bit chubby, they are giving me roles like landlord, husband, or uncle. Some even stopped giving me ‘bad boy’ roles because they assume I won’t be able to interpret the character, but they will be shocked when they see my upcoming movies,” he explained.

The actor’s remarks highlight a broader issue in Nollywood, where physical appearance often dictates casting choices, sometimes overshadowing talent or versatility. Okoye’s story underscores the pressures actors face to conform to certain body standards, regardless of their acting abilities or professional experience.

Despite the challenges, Okoye remains committed to his craft and optimistic about his future projects. By sharing his experiences publicly, he hopes to draw attention to the biases in the industry and encourage more inclusive casting practices that prioritize skill and character interpretation over physical appearance.

His revelations have sparked conversations among fans and fellow actors alike, with many taking to social media to discuss the persistent typecasting in Nollywood. Okoye’s candidness provides a rare glimpse into the obstacles that actors must navigate behind the glamour and popularity associated with the film industry.

As Nollywood continues to grow both locally and internationally, Okoye’s experiences serve as a reminder that the industry still has work to do in terms of embracing diversity in body types and challenging outdated stereotypes.
