Wakanow Group, one of Africa’s leading travel technology companies, has taken a major leap beyond the travel sector with its acquisition of NairaBox, a fast-growing digital entertainment and lifestyle platform developed by JORG Technologies.
The move underscores Wakanow’s broader ambition to build a connected lifestyle ecosystem that merges travel, events, food, and leisure into one seamless experience.
Founded in 2015 by Ugochukwu Jay Chikezie, Tokunbo Adetona, and Damilola Jegede, NairaBox began as a simple ticketing platform for discovering and booking movies, concerts, and events.
Over the years, it evolved into a dominant force in Nigeria’s digital entertainment scene, pioneering barcode-based ticketing and introducing Africa’s first subscription-based cinema ticketing service.
To date, the company has sold over 10 million tickets across cinemas, live concerts, and lifestyle events, transforming how audiences engage with entertainment.
In a statement issued through Heavyweight PR Agency, Bayo Adedeji, the Group CEO of Wakanow, said the acquisition aligns with the company’s vision to create deeper customer connections across multiple lifestyle sectors.
Under the acquisition arrangement, Ugochukwu Chikezie will continue as CEO of NairaBox during the transition period, ensuring operational continuity and strategic alignment.
Additionally, Tobi Andero, formerly with Oracle Experiential Marketing, has been appointed as Head of Business to strengthen the platform’s market positioning and growth strategy.
Confirming the deal in a LinkedIn post, Chikezie reflected on the platform’s decade-long journey and how the acquisition marks the next stage of its evolution.
Although the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, insiders revealed that Wakanow is already engaging with cinema operators to resolve outstanding debts linked to NairaBox’s operations, ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining confidence across industry stakeholders.
The move marks a strategic diversification for Wakanow, which is steadily evolving from a travel agency into a full-fledged lifestyle technology ecosystem.
The company now operates a portfolio that includes Wakanow.com, Kalabash54.com, Roomde.com, Onburd.com, Pointview Travels, and Trip Merchant all aimed at enhancing Africa’s digital travel and lifestyle experience.
By integrating NairaBox into its ecosystem, Wakanow aims to redefine the customer experience — enabling users to not only plan trips but also discover and book events, restaurants, and cultural experiences in real time.
The acquisition signals a growing trend among African tech companies seeking to bridge travel, leisure, and entertainment under one umbrella.
Ultimately, the deal reflects Wakanow’s long-term vision to become a pan-African lifestyle brand, blurring the lines between travel, culture, and entertainment while positioning itself as a one-stop hub for African consumers both at home and abroad.
