Afrobeats superstar, Burna Boy, has opened up on why he prefers to live in Nigeria despite his massive global fame and success.
The Grammy Award-winning singer, known for his outspoken nature, revealed that he feels a stronger sense of true freedom in his home country than he does in the United States.
Speaking during his debut appearance on Twitch with popular streamer PlaqueBoyMax, Burna Boy explained that the kind of liberty he experiences in Nigeria cannot be matched anywhere else, not even in the U.S.
He shared his thoughts during PlaqueBoyMax’s late-night Twitch show In The Booth, marking his first-ever appearance on the platform.
“The real meaning of freedom exists in my country. I can’t ever be completely free here. Guys end up in jail here in America,” Burna Boy said while speaking on the show. The singer noted that although the U.S. appears glamorous from the outside, it doesn’t provide the same level of comfort and freedom that he feels back home.
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, has often expressed his deep connection to Nigeria. Despite his international success and frequent travels, the self-acclaimed “African Giant” has repeatedly emphasized that Africa and Nigeria in particular remains at the core of his identity.
Over the years, Burna Boy has built a strong reputation for being proud of his roots and unapologetically African. His music, which blends Afro-fusion, reggae, and dancehall influences, consistently carries themes of black pride, freedom, and cultural authenticity.
The singer’s statement has sparked mixed reactions online, with many fans praising his patriotism, while others pointed out the challenges that ordinary Nigerians face daily.
Still, Burna Boy’s sentiment underscores his deep love for his homeland and his belief that real freedom isn’t defined by wealth or status but by a sense of belonging and peace of mind.
For Burna Boy, Nigeria remains more than just a home it’s where he feels truly alive and unrestrained, regardless of his global recognition.
