In the early hours of Monday, a two-storey building collapsed at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop in the Oyingbo area of Lagos, leaving an undisclosed number of people trapped. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a situation report released by its Director, Margaret Adeseye.

Adeseye disclosed that the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team was promptly dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at around 12:20 a.m. “It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which has reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” the statement said.

The structure had previously shown visible signs of structural distress but, tragically, gave way while residents were still inside. Emergency teams rushed to the site to begin rescue operations, navigating the debris to save trapped occupants.

As of the latest update, 15 people have been rescued from the rubble, including seven men, four women, and four children. All the survivors were injured to varying degrees and have been transported to nearby medical facilities, including the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta and the General Hospital, Odan, on Lagos Island.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described chaotic scenes as neighbors and emergency personnel worked tirelessly to pull survivors from the wreckage. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service continues to coordinate the rescue operation, ensuring that no one remains trapped and that medical attention is promptly given to those affected.

Authorities are urging residents in the vicinity to remain cautious and avoid the area to allow emergency responders to work efficiently. The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation, but preliminary reports indicate the building had been identified as structurally compromised prior to the incident.

This building collapse in Lagos is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by distressed structures in densely populated urban areas. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and officials have pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available.
