It was an emotional atmosphere in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, as family, friends, and colleagues gathered to pay their last respects to late Arise Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, fondly known as “Sommie.”

The young journalist, whose life was tragically cut short during an armed robbery attack at her Abuja residence in September 2025, was laid to rest on Saturday amid tears and heartfelt tributes.

The funeral Mass, which took place at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Agulu, was attended by dignitaries, including former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The church overflowed with mourners who came from near and far to celebrate the life of a woman described as vibrant, passionate, and full of promise.

During his sermon, Reverend Father Peter Ezewuzie of St. Theresa’s Parish urged the grieving family to find comfort in their faith and the belief that Sommie lived a purposeful life, even if short.

He said, “The Lord who created us knows the beginning from the end. Some may feel her life was cut short, but only God knows why.

He loves her more than you do. The only thing you owe her is your prayers. She is in a better place today.”

The cleric emphasized that the true measure of life is not in its length but in its quality, reminding everyone to live each day with purpose.

Former Governor Peter Obi, who hails from the same town as the deceased, described Somtochukwu’s death as “a painful loss that only God can explain.”

In his emotional tribute, he said, “We cannot question God. When I heard of her passing, I didn’t even know she was from Agulu. Our coming here is to console the family, but this is indeed a huge loss.

Before I left Birmingham yesterday, I told some people I was rushing home for the burial of one of my daughters. Please keep her and her family in your prayers.”

Obi’s remarks captured the collective grief of those present, as tears flowed freely from mourners who spoke of Sommie’s humility, professionalism, and dedication to journalism. Her colleagues from Arise News also turned out in large numbers to honor her memory.

Speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, Sommie’s uncle, Mr. Obi Maduagwu, expressed deep gratitude to the management of Arise News for their unwavering support since her passing.

“We thank the management of Arise News. They have been with us from the beginning,” he said. “We also appreciate everyone who traveled from far and near to be with us today.”

As her remains were laid to rest around 1:30 p.m., the air was heavy with sorrow but also filled with gratitude for a life that touched many. Somtochukwu Maduagwu’s story, though marked by tragedy, served as a reminder of the fragility of life and the impact one can make within a short time.

Her name will continue to live on in the hearts of those who admired her courage, professionalism, and cheerful spirit.
