Nollywood actor and philanthropist, Williams Uchemba, has stirred nationwide reactions after calling for kidnappers to be executed on live television.
The actor made the controversial statement in a video shared on his social media page, where he expressed deep frustration over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and what he described as the government’s failure to enforce existing laws against kidnapping.
In the video, Uchemba lamented that despite the fact that several states in Nigeria have already prescribed the death penalty for kidnapping, many offenders are neither punished nor brought to justice.
According to him, this lack of enforcement emboldens criminals to continue their activities with little fear of consequences.
“The capital punishment for kidnapping is death. Some of these kidnappers are caught, yet we don’t hear anything. If you ask me, there should be a dedicated channel like BBNaija showing these criminals being caught and publicly executed. Until we start enforcing consequences, we won’t see results,” Uchemba said.
Using an analogy, the actor compared the nation’s leniency toward kidnappers to a parent’s refusal to discipline a child who steals, warning that such negligence only produces more dangerous individuals.
“When a child begins to steal meat from the mother’s pot and the mother does very little in terms of punishment, what she’s doing is breeding a hardened criminal that may one day destroy her life or bring disgrace to the family,” he stated.
Uchemba further drew parallels with China, emphasizing that the Asian nation’s firm stance on crime has helped maintain law and order.
“We want to be like China, but we don’t have the courage China has. The punishment for kidnapping and corruption there is death,” he added.
His remarks have since gone viral, sparking intense debate among Nigerians. While some social media users agreed with Uchemba’s call for stronger punitive measures, arguing that harsh enforcement could deter criminals, others criticized the idea as extreme and a violation of human rights.
Critics pointed out that televised executions could be misused by authorities and might lead to wrongful deaths if due process is not strictly followed. Human rights advocates also cautioned that such practices would damage Nigeria’s global image and contradict international human rights conventions.
However, Uchemba’s supporters insisted that desperate times call for desperate measures, especially considering the alarming rate of abductions across the country.
Many argued that public executions, while controversial, could serve as a powerful warning to potential kidnappers and corrupt officials.
The actor’s comments come amid growing public concern over security challenges in Nigeria, with kidnapping for ransom becoming increasingly rampant in many states.
Citizens have repeatedly called on the government to take decisive action to restore safety and enforce the law more strictly.
As the debate continues, Uchemba’s statement has reignited discussions on whether Nigeria needs more visible and immediate consequences for serious crimes or whether such drastic measures could push the nation further into moral and legal crisis.
Either way, his comments have once again placed the spotlight on the country’s fragile justice system and the urgent need for reform.
