A man who bears a striking resemblance to Nigerian singer Portable has stirred social media after claiming that the music star wants to “deal with him” for performing his songs at a show and earning money from it.
The doppelgänger took to social media to narrate his experience, appealing to netizens for help. According to him, he had performed Portable’s hit tracks at an event, where many fans reportedly mistook him for the singer himself.
“I just went to a show to perform some of Portable’s songs, and people thought I was him because of how similar we look,” the man explained. “I didn’t intend to cause any trouble, I just performed and fans enjoyed it.”
However, his actions seemingly did not sit well with Portable, who allegedly disapproved of the lookalike performing his songs without prior permission. Concerns were reportedly raised that fans could be misled by their striking resemblance, a factor compounded by the man’s adoption of Portable’s signature hairstyle and mannerisms.
In a now-viral video, the lookalike was seen pleading with the singer, visibly anxious about his safety. At one point, he was heard speaking in Yoruba, saying, “Please don’t kill me the way they killed Mohbad.”
The man’s appeal has ignited discussions on social media, with reactions ranging from sympathy to criticism. Some users expressed concern for the lookalike’s safety, while others chastised him for impersonating Portable and attempting to profit from it.
One netizen, @OlusegunBigfish, humorously criticized the situation, writing: “U wan collect food from potable mouth??? U don give ham percentage??? Ehnn 😭😂”
The incident has sparked wider conversations about the risks faced by celebrities’ doppelgängers and impersonators, particularly in the Nigerian music industry. Many fans noted that while imitating a star can be entertaining, it can also bring unintended consequences if done without consent, especially when financial gain is involved.
This is not the first time a celebrity lookalike has made headlines in Nigeria. With the music industry increasingly drawing attention to intellectual property and brand identity, performers are being reminded of the importance of seeking permission before performing another artist’s work, particularly if their resemblance to the star is striking.
As the story circulates online, netizens continue to debate the ethics of impersonating a music icon and the potential dangers involved. While some sympathize with the man, urging Portable to show mercy, others argue that impersonation can cross boundaries, especially when it involves revenue and public misrepresentation.
For now, the lookalike’s plea remains a cautionary tale for aspiring performers who might consider emulating established artists, highlighting the fine line between homage and infringement—and the potential personal risks involved.
