Big Brother Naija star Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has become the focus of heated online debates after a viral video captured her partying at a nightclub in Abuja, just weeks after the devastating loss of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor.
Recall that the reality TV personality recently lost her younger sister in a tragic accident involving one of billionaire Aliko Dangote’s trucks in Edo State. The heartbreaking incident, which shook many Nigerians, left fans and well-wishers expressing deep sympathy for the Otabor family.
According to reports, Ruth Otabor died in the accident that involved a Dangote truck in Benin City, plunging the family into mourning. Phyna later revealed in an emotional statement that Dangote’s team allegedly compensated the family with ₦20 million after the fatal crash.
However, a few days after Ruth’s burial, a new development stirred another wave of online reactions. A video surfaced on social media showing Phyna at a high-end nightclub in Abuja, dancing and socialising with friends. The footage, which has since gone viral, showed the BBNaija winner in high spirits, appearing to enjoy the night out despite the recent tragedy.
The video sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians and her fan base. Some social media users criticised the reality star for what they described as “insensitive behaviour”, arguing that it was inappropriate for her to be seen at a party so soon after the loss of her sister.
One online comment read: “Losing a loved one is painful, but there should be a period of respect and mourning before going to parties.”
On the other hand, several supporters came to Phyna’s defence, insisting that grief manifests differently for everyone. They argued that the former BBNaija champion might be using social activities as a way to cope with her grief and move forward after the tragic loss.
A fan tweeted: “Everyone mourns in their own way. Maybe this is her way of dealing with the pain. People should stop judging her.”
This latest incident has kept Phyna in the public eye, showing how social media often amplifies celebrities’ personal lives. It also reignites conversations about societal expectations around mourning and how public figures handle grief under the constant watch of the public.
As the video continues to trend, the debate remains divided: whether Phyna’s night out was inappropriate or simply a part of her healing journey.
