Nigerian singer Omawumi has opened up about the instrumental role music producer Cobhams Asuquo played in shaping her career and providing critical opportunities that propelled her to greater heights in the entertainment industry.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, shared on X on Monday, Omawumi reflected on how her relationship with Cobhams has influenced her professional journey. She described their first encounter as pivotal, noting that it came at a time when she was seeking guidance and new directions for her music career.
“Cobhams gave me one of my first opportunities. The first time we met, he just called. I knew we met on the show, and he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo—you know he likes to funkify his name. There is a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it,’” Omawumi recounted.
She explained that although she had no way of knowing the impact that moment would have, accepting the offer ultimately opened doors she had not imagined.
“I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. That opportunity came entirely because Cobhams reached out and trusted me with it,” she said.
Omawumi also highlighted the invaluable lessons she gained from working closely with Cobhams, particularly regarding artistic growth and professional discipline.
“Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture. Beyond the music itself, I learned how to carry myself as an artist, how to approach every project with dedication, and how to embrace opportunities even when the outcome isn’t immediately clear,” she added.
The singer’s acknowledgment of Cobhams underscores the importance of mentorship in the Nigerian music industry, where emerging talents often rely on the guidance of established professionals to navigate the competitive landscape.
Omawumi’s story serves as a reminder that behind every successful artist is often a network of mentors and supporters who help shape careers. For her, Cobhams Asuquo was not only a producer but also a mentor whose support and guidance significantly contributed to her growth as a performer and public figure.
Through her reflections, Omawumi has highlighted how opportunities, mentorship, and learning from experienced professionals can transform careers and create lasting impacts in the entertainment world.
