Nigerian singer Euphemia Ekumah, better known by her stage name GoodGirl LA, has opened up about her struggles with family pressure, regrets about her education, and the difficult journey that shaped her music career.

In a candid interview with Hip TV, the Early Momo crooner revealed that her decision to abandon formal education and pursue music caused a major rift between her and her family, particularly her father, who once disowned her for choosing her passion over academics.

The singer explained that she was forced into writing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam even though she had no interest in going to university.

According to her, she only did it to please her parents, who were determined for her to follow a traditional educational path.

“I have never regretted not completing school. I wish I never went to school. I wish I left home earlier. That’s my only regret. I wish I never wrote JAMB. I wish I ran away when my dad was forcing me to write JAMB,” she said.

GoodGirl LA added that her biggest regret was wasting valuable time in pursuit of a dream that wasn’t hers. “I wish I started chasing my dreams earlier. But I was 16 and unsure of what to do. However, when I was around 17, 18, I got clarity and absconded from home,” she continued.

The singer recounted how her father’s reaction to her decision was harsh and heartbreaking. She disclosed that he evicted her from their home and disowned her after she informed him that she was no longer interested in continuing her studies.

“When I told my parents that I wasn’t interested in going to school anymore, my dad asked me to leave his house. It was crazy. At one point, my dad even disowned me. Then, I left home,” she recounted.

Despite the painful experience, GoodGirl LA noted that the separation from her family pushed her to take her music more seriously and work hard to prove herself. She revealed that she eventually reconciled with her father after achieving some level of success in the entertainment industry.

Her journey, marked by rejection and self-discovery, has inspired many young Nigerians who face similar struggles in balancing personal dreams with parental expectations.

The singer emphasized that, although her relationship with her father was strained for years, she never lost sight of her vision and continued to pursue her goals with determination.

GoodGirl LA’s story reflects the experiences of many Nigerian creatives who face societal and family resistance when choosing unconventional career paths. Today, she stands as one of the promising voices in the Nigerian music scene, celebrated for her soulful sound and artistic authenticity.

Her experience serves as a reminder that success often comes at a price and that following one’s passion sometimes requires courage, sacrifice, and resilience.
