Streaming now on Kava TV and Netflix Nigeria, “Her Excellency” is a political drama that dives into the chaotic world of power, paranoia, and privilege. At its core, it tells the story of the domineering wife of a state governor who wants control over everything and everyone — including her husband. It’s a promising premise, one that could have explored the psychology of power and insecurity, but somehow, the execution doesn’t quite live up to its potential.

The film begins with a strong setup. From the opening scenes, it’s clear we’re in for a high-stakes political ride. The governor’s wife, played by Sola Sobowale, is commanding, confident, and ruthless. She doesn’t trust anyone — not her staff, her allies, or even her husband. She runs her home and her husband’s political career like a private empire, and it’s clear early on that she’s the real force behind the scenes.

At first, I was hooked. The visuals were sleek, the setting was lavish, and the cinematography was undeniably rich. The production quality of “Her Excellency” is top-notch — beautifully shot with elegant costumes, crisp editing, and high-end aesthetics that scream luxury. The filmmakers clearly spared no expense in bringing this world to life, and it shows.

However, once the story began to unfold, the excitement slowly faded. The narrative quickly became predictable, and many of the plot twists felt recycled from similar Nollywood political dramas. The story lacks the depth it needs to fully explore its themes — power, trust, betrayal, and control. Everything feels somewhat surface-level, and the screenplay doesn’t dig deep enough to make the viewer truly care about the characters’ motivations.

Performance-wise, the cast does an admirable job. Supporting actors bring energy and believability to their roles, and the ensemble works well together. But surprisingly, Sola Sobowale, who has built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s strongest performers, doesn’t quite deliver her usual magic here. Her portrayal of the governor’s wife, though powerful in parts, often feels exaggerated and inconsistent.

Some of her scenes come off as theatrical rather than emotional. For instance, in one particularly puzzling moment, she storms into the governor’s mansion, orders everyone to “gerrout,” and yet, her husband sits calmly as if nothing is wrong. It’s one of those moments that pulls you out of the story completely — the reactions feel unnatural and the dialogue awkward.

As the movie progresses, her growing paranoia and mistrust of her husband start to border on absurdity. It’s hard to tell whether the film is portraying extreme behavior or hinting at a deeper psychological issue, but either way, it’s not handled with enough clarity or sensitivity to make sense. The line between intentional madness and poor writing becomes blurred.

Still, “Her Excellency” has its audience. Many viewers have praised its glamor, fashion, and dramatic energy — and if you enjoy Nollywood’s larger-than-life storytelling, you might find it entertaining. It’s visually stunning and has moments of genuine tension, but for me, the substance just didn’t match the shine.

In the end, “Her Excellency” is a film that looks great but struggles to say something meaningful. Beneath all the style and star power, the story feels hollow and repetitive.

My Rating: 4.5/10
