Allegations have surfaced that popular actress Lizzy Anjorin recently used her social media platforms to encourage followers to pirate movies set for December release, prompting widespread condemnation from colleagues and calls for a formal investigation.

According to posts and screenshots shared across multiple accounts, the actress is said to have urged her online followers to download and distribute films produced by colleagues later this year. Film industry insiders describe the alleged behaviour as a direct attack on the livelihoods of filmmakers and performers who depend on box office and streaming revenue.

“Issues like this go beyond personal rivalry — they threaten the entire creative ecosystem,” said one producer who asked to remain anonymous. “Piracy harms everyone who works on a project, from cast and crew to the small businesses that support production.”

Industry stakeholders and rights groups say the allegations — if verified — represent not just unethical conduct but potentially criminal behaviour under Nigeria’s copyright and cybercrime laws. Legal experts noted that organising or instigating mass piracy can expose perpetrators and those who act on such calls to civil suits and criminal prosecution.

“This kind of activity, when it involves directing others to infringe copyright on a large scale, is actionable,” said an intellectual-property lawyer. “Victims can pursue damages and request that authorities investigate and block distribution channels.”

Representatives for Lizzy Anjorin could not be reached for immediate comment. The actress has in the past been a prominent and polarising figure on social media; supporters and critics regularly clash online. Her publicist or social-media team should be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations.

Calls for a timely response have also come from creative-industry bodies and anti-piracy organisations, who urged the police, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), and other relevant agencies to investigate. Many creatives urged fans to reject calls to infringe copyright and to report any posts that solicit illegal activity.

As the controversy unfolds, producers and distributors reportedly are preparing contingency plans for their December releases and emphasising lawful channels for viewing and purchasing films. Legal observers say the episode highlights the need for stronger enforcement and public education about the economic damage of piracy.

However, if you are rich enough with a good lawyer to fight for you, you may consider her directive, if not...!
