Nigerian comedian and actor Seyi Law has openly voiced concern over the escalating economic hardship in Nigeria, emphasizing that ordinary citizens are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.

Speaking on the popular Inside The Box podcast on October 4, 2025, Seyi Law highlighted the need for government officials to acknowledge the severity of the crisis rather than downplay it for political convenience.

According to the comedian, the growing frustration among Nigerians is largely fueled by hunger and the financial strain caused by ongoing economic reforms.

“Nigerians are hungry, and hungry people are angry people. I feel the pain too. I hate when we try to switch such things under the carpet, which is what politicians do.

I don’t like it,” he said during the interview. He stressed that transparency and empathy from leaders are essential to help citizens understand the sacrifices required by economic reforms.

Seyi Law recounted his personal experience with the economic downturn, revealing that the depreciation of the naira has made supporting his family abroad increasingly difficult.

His wife and children, who reside in the United Kingdom, now cost him significantly more to maintain financially. “My family has been in the UK since 2019. For every naira that I change to pounds, it costs me N2000. It wasn’t what it was costing me before. It means if I was spending N2m before, I have to spend N5m, so it comes with pain,” he explained.

Through his candid reflections, Seyi Law underlined the tangible impact of currency depreciation on Nigerians with families overseas, as well as the broader struggles facing ordinary citizens who must navigate soaring prices for essentials such as food, transport, and education.

He argued that acknowledging these difficulties is the first step toward meaningful engagement between government officials and the populace.

Despite the challenges, the comedian remained optimistic that Nigeria can weather the current economic storm if leaders exercise honesty and show genuine concern for the welfare of citizens.

He called on officials to communicate clearly about the costs and benefits of ongoing reforms, urging that people should be made aware that short-term pain could eventually yield long-term relief. “Let us acknowledge the people’s pain and let them know that this reform is coming with this pain, but hopefully there will be a relief at the end,” he added.

Seyi Law’s comments resonate in a country where millions of Nigerians are grappling with inflation, unemployment, and the high cost of living.

By sharing his personal experiences alongside his broader social observations, he has positioned himself as a public figure willing to speak truth to power, using his platform to highlight the pressing economic realities faced by many citizens.

The comedian’s statements come at a time when Nigerians continue to voice frustration over economic policies, currency fluctuations, and the challenges of sustaining families both locally and abroad.

His call for empathy and transparency underscores the need for a government that not only implements reforms but also engages honestly with the people it serves, ensuring that citizens are prepared for the sacrifices necessary to achieve long-term economic stability.
