Nigerian singer Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, better known as Iyanya, has appealed to the public to show greater empathy toward celebrities, reminding fans that fame and success do not make entertainers immune to emotional or mental battles.

In a heartfelt post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, the ‘Your Waist’ crooner reflected on the unseen challenges of living life under constant public attention. According to him, the glitz and glamour often associated with fame can be misleading, as many stars silently endure personal struggles behind the spotlight.

Iyanya explained that while fame brings admiration, it also comes with immense pressure, scrutiny, and expectations that can take a toll on one’s mental health. He emphasized that society needs to view public figures as human beings capable of pain, sadness, and vulnerability, rather than assuming they live perfect, problem-free lives.

“We need to understand that celebrities are human with deep emotions and struggles like everyone else,” he wrote. “Beyond the glamorization is simply a person simply wishing to be human like the rest of us.”

The singer, who rose to prominence after winning the first season of Project Fame West Africa, admitted that the entertainment industry can sometimes be isolating. He noted that constant judgment from fans and the media leaves little room for vulnerability or error.

“People often see us smiling, performing, or attending events, and they assume everything is fine,” he hinted in earlier posts. “But behind the scenes, there are countless untold stories of pain, pressure, and personal battles that many of us deal with daily.”

Iyanya’s message comes at a time when conversations around celebrity mental health are gaining more attention in Nigeria and across the world. Several public figures, including musicians, actors, and influencers, have recently spoken up about their experiences with depression, anxiety, and burnout due to societal pressure and public criticism.

The singer went further to highlight how male celebrities, in particular, face even deeper struggles because of long-standing cultural and societal expectations that discourage men from expressing emotions or seeking help.

“For male celebrities, it is always difficult to bounce back after hitting a low point because men are wired to be stoic and not show vulnerability,” he explained. “Not to ask for help for fear of being seen as weak.”

Iyanya’s remarks have since resonated with many fans online, with numerous users praising him for addressing an often-ignored issue. Others described his message as timely, especially in an industry where the pressure to maintain a perfect image often leads to emotional exhaustion.

Mental health experts have also echoed Iyanya’s sentiments, stressing that public figures, like everyone else, need support systems, understanding, and the freedom to express their struggles without judgment.

Iyanya, who has previously spoken about the challenges he faced in his career and personal life, continues to use his platform to advocate for self-awareness and emotional well-being. His post serves as a reminder that behind the fame, music, and headlines, celebrities remain human beings trying to navigate life just like everyone else.

His message concluded with an appeal for kindness and empathy: a simple reminder that compassion can go a long way in making the world — and the entertainment industry — a little more humane.
