Veteran Nigerian Afro-Juju legend, Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, widely known as Shina Peters, has broken his silence to debunk viral rumours circulating on social media that he had died of a heart attack.
The 67-year-old music icon took to his official Instagram page on Saturday to address the claims, assuring his fans, family, and well-wishers that he is alive, healthy, and still very much active.
In recent days, a fake report had spread across various social media platforms alleging that the Afro-Juju star had passed away. The false post, which quickly went viral, included hashtags such as #MusicIcon, #Tribute, and #GoneTooSoon, misleading fans and prompting several condolence messages from followers who believed the news to be true.
Reacting to the confusion, Shina Peters firmly denied the story and called on his supporters to disregard the report and help flag it as fake. He wrote on Instagram:
“This is False News ❌ I’m alive and well… kindly disregard, flag and report the promoters of such news.”
The music veteran also expressed his frustration in Yoruba, saying, “E da ke Rumors!!” — which loosely translates to “Stop spreading rumours.”
The legendary singer, who is widely credited with revolutionising the Afro-Juju genre in the late 1980s, reminded fans that social media has become a double-edged tool — while it helps artists connect with their audience, it can also serve as a breeding ground for misinformation. He advised the public to always verify sensitive information before sharing it, as false news can cause unnecessary panic among loved ones and fans.
Known for timeless hits such as Ace (Afro-Juju Series 1) and Experience, Shina Peters has remained a defining figure in Nigeria’s music industry for over four decades. His fusion of highlife, juju, and Afrobeat rhythms not only earned him massive acclaim but also helped shape the evolution of contemporary Nigerian music.
Many of his fans took to the comment section to express relief after his clarification, with several praising him for directly addressing the rumours.
With his firm response, Shina Peters joins a growing list of Nigerian celebrities who have had to confront fake death reports online, a disturbing trend that continues to spread misinformation and anxiety among the public.
The Afro-Juju star reaffirmed his commitment to his craft, promising fans that he is here to stay and will continue to make music that uplifts and entertains.
