Nigerian musician Abolore Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has revealed plans to get a tribal mark when he turns 50, a decision he says is in honour of his father.

The 45-year-old singer made the revelation in a recent video shared on his TikTok page, sparking curiosity and conversations among fans and fellow musicians.

“By the time I’m 50, I will get the same mark as my dad. That’s what I want to do for my birthday. A lot of my boys said I won’t do that, but you will see,” 9ice stated, confirming his commitment to embracing the traditional mark.

The musician, who hails from Ogbomosho, is known for his distinctive use of the Yoruba language in his music, proverbial lyrics, and unique style of delivery that has earned him a loyal fanbase over the years.

9ice first rose to prominence in 2008 with his hit track Gongo Aso, which showcased his vocal prowess and storytelling abilities.

Since then, he has released multiple albums and chart-topping singles, maintaining relevance in the Nigerian music industry through his consistent blend of tradition and contemporary sounds.

Beyond his musical achievements, 9ice has often been vocal about his spiritual beliefs. In an interview with Nancy Isime in August 2025, he disclosed that he is a traditional worshiper, a path he embraced after a harrowing experience with a “spiritual attack” that left him vomiting blood for six months.

He recounted how someone referred him to an Ifa priest, who helped him overcome the affliction. Following this period, 9ice admitted that he regretted not becoming a traditionalist earlier in life, saying that the experience gave him a deeper appreciation for his roots and culture.

The decision to get a tribal mark, according to 9ice, is both a personal and symbolic gesture, connecting him to his father and their heritage. While some of his friends doubted he would follow through with it, 9ice remains resolute, promising that his 50th birthday will mark the occasion.

The revelation adds another layer to the artist’s persona, blending his musical legacy with his cultural and spiritual identity. Fans have expressed a mix of surprise, admiration, and anticipation, eager to see how the singer’s journey will unfold as he approaches this milestone.

9ice continues to be a prominent voice in Nigerian music, not just for his songs but also for his outspoken personality and commitment to tradition.

His forthcoming decision to get a tribal mark reinforces his connection to his lineage and offers a glimpse into how cultural identity continues to play a role in his life and artistry.

As he looks forward to his 50th birthday, 9ice’s plans serve as a reminder of the influence of heritage, spirituality, and personal conviction in shaping the lives of public figures in Nigeria and beyond.
