Nigerian music star Yemi Alade has opened up about her personal struggles with depression, shedding light on a period in her life when confusion about her own age deeply affected her mental well-being.

In an intimate conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the “Johnny” singer revealed that for three years, she mistakenly told people she was 32, only to later discover she was actually 25. This realization, she said, triggered a bout of depression.

“There was a time someone asked me my age, and I kept saying for three years I was 22. Then I realised I was 25 years old. I took out my phone and I did the mathematics. I was depressed for a few days. My mind wasn’t taken into process.

It was mental, for three years I didn’t know my right age,” Yemi confessed.

She described the experience as a challenging time for her mental health, explaining that her mind struggled to process the reality of her true age. For three years, she admitted, she lived in a state of confusion, unable to reconcile her self-perception with the facts.

Beyond her reflections on age and depression, Yemi Alade has shared wisdom about friendships and relationships in recent social media posts. In an Instagram post, she wrote about the importance of conflict and understanding boundaries in relationships, noting that quarrels often reveal the true depth of bonds.

“Until you have quarrelled with your friend or partner, you will never know the true depth of your relationship or Canoe,” she said. “Allowing people to exit your life and knowing when to end a friendship or any ship whatsoever is a life-saving intuition.”

Yemi has also been candid about the challenges of navigating fame and misinformation in the music industry. Last year, she addressed viral reports claiming she had been sexually harassed, which she quickly denied. Reflecting on the false reports, she called them “stupidity at its peak” and unprofessional, revealing the emotional toll of dealing with rumour peddlers.

“When I read the interview, I was speechless,” Yemi said, pointing out how such unfounded stories had caused her unnecessary distress. She emphasised that these experiences were a reminder of the importance of discernment and resilience in the face of false narratives.

The singer has also used her social media platforms to set boundaries with colleagues and fans. On Twitter, she directed a stern message at an unidentified colleague who had been disrespectful online, stressing the importance of respect in professional and personal interactions.

The “Johnny” singer wrote, “One shouldn’t think that because of social media, everyone is their mate. Take your time.” Her statement underlines her commitment to maintaining personal and professional respect in an era where digital interactions often blur boundaries.

Through her candid reflections on mental health, social dynamics, and the pressures of public life, Yemi Alade continues to offer insights into the realities of being a global music star, while encouraging fans to value self-awareness, resilience, and meaningful relationships.
