Veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu has bravely opened up about her painful experience with domestic violence, sharing her story in an emotional interview with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya on “Real Life With Aunty Ayo.”
Ngozi recounted a terrifying incident during her marriage when her husband violently attacked her. “I plaited Bob Marley, he drew me, and one strand of the attachment came out with blood. I didn’t know where I got the strength from, but I picked up a pestle. I was ready to kill him that day and go to jail. My neighbours saw me naked,” she revealed.
The actress also explained why she walked away from her marriage, making a courageous decision the day before her wedding. Despite begging from her husband and family members, Ngozi refused to sign the registrar.
“Don’t fall for any man who beats you and begs you later. Once beaten, twice shy. If you take it once, get ready, you must be ready to take it for the rest of your life,” she advised. She emphasized that marriage is not a do-or-die affair, especially when domestic violence is involved.
Ngozi’s stance aligns with her past views on infidelity in marriage, stating that physical abuse—not cheating—should be the deal breaker.
Other Nollywood veterans have shared similar experiences. Iya Awero revealed that her husband became violent once they married, despite supporting her acting career while dating. She endured abuse every time she went to a movie set, and her marriage ended when her husband passed away.
Similarly, Rose Odika spoke about the dangers of toxic relationships, saying, “There is no need for a toxic marriage, and if it isn’t worth it, it isn’t worth your life. A man who meets a woman as an actor should marry her as an actor, and if he can’t, he should go.”
Motilola, a mother of two, explained her decision to announce her divorce publicly, emphasizing her refusal to be blackmailed by a blogger threatening to expose her. She criticized the societal shaming of women over failed marriages, noting, “No woman goes into a marriage with the intention of leaving.”
This candid discussion highlights the importance of prioritizing safety and self-respect in marriage, especially for women navigating domestic abuse.
