Nigerian rapper Temidayo Omoniyi, popularly known as Zlatan Ibile, has shared candid insights into his life as a struggling artist during his days as a student at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Zanku crooner, now a household name in Nigeria’s music scene, recounted how financial hardships shaped his early journey in the industry, even after achieving early recognition.

Zlatan, who won the Airtel One Mic Talent show in 2014 at the age of 19, revealed that winning the competition did not immediately relieve his financial struggles.

He admitted that he continued to face challenges supporting himself and covering basic needs such as food and school expenses. In a recent interview with popular streamer Shank Comics, Zlatan disclosed a creative solution he came up with to navigate these difficulties.

“Back in school, when there was no money for food, I would just wait till night and use the car I won from the Airtel One Mic Talent show to run cab from Abeokuta to Shagamu for ₦350,” he recalled.

The car he received as part of his prize became not only a symbol of early success but also a practical tool to sustain himself. By operating a small transport service at night, Zlatan was able to pay for his meals and meet other personal expenses while continuing his education.

Despite these struggles, Zlatan’s breakthrough in the Nigerian music industry came in 2017 when he collaborated with ace rapper Olamide on the hit song My Body

The rapper described this collaboration as a turning point in his career, crediting Olamide for delivering a “life-changing” verse that propelled him into mainstream recognition.

From that moment, Zlatan’s career trajectory shifted dramatically, eventually establishing him as a major figure in the Nigerian music scene and the leader of Zanku Music.

Zlatan’s story is not only a testament to perseverance but also a reflection of the broader challenges faced by upcoming artists in Nigeria.

While talent shows and competitions provide opportunities, they do not always offer immediate financial stability. Artists must often navigate multiple avenues, balancing education, survival, and career ambitions.

Zlatan’s ingenuity in using his prize car to create income highlights the resourcefulness required to succeed under such circumstances.

Today, Zlatan Ibile is widely celebrated for his contributions to the Zanku genre, influencing a new generation of Nigerian artists. His journey from struggling student to music star serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that resilience, creativity, and strategic collaborations can transform potential into success.

Through his early struggles, Zlatan has cultivated not only a successful career but also a narrative that motivates young Nigerians to pursue their dreams despite obstacles.
