The Nigerian Army has launched a thorough investigation into the death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, Regimental Medical Officer of 6 Battalion, 2 Brigade, Uyo. Haruna suffered severe burns in a domestic fire involving his wife on September 22, 2025.

Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, stated that the officer was immediately rushed to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), where he received treatment until his passing on October 6, 2025.

“The Nigerian Army commiserates deeply with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased officer and prays for the repose of his soul. An investigation was instituted from the onset of the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding it, and the outcome will be made public upon conclusion,” the statement said.

While inquiries are ongoing, Haruna’s wife, Retyit, denied deliberately causing the fire. In a viral post titled, “I Didn’t Kill Him, Please Nigerians, He Did It To Himself,” she shared that she had faced repeated domestic violence since the early months of their marriage.

She recounted that the fire broke out after her husband allegedly threatened to burn their home and demanded she leave without taking any belongings. “He came home with petrol and said I should leave or else he would set me ablaze. I called our Commanding Officer but couldn’t reach him on time. He accidentally kicked the petrol, and when the lighter fell from his hand, the fire caught,” Retyit explained.

Retyit said she escaped the flames, while her husband reportedly re-entered the house to retrieve documents and was engulfed by fire.

The Army has appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, promising that the investigation will be thorough and transparent.

The incident has sparked nationwide attention, with calls for impartial inquiries and stronger support systems for military families dealing with domestic challenges.
