Nigerian rapper Erigga has raised concerns about the state of romantic relationships in the country, attributing the rise of transactional dynamics to the influence of internet fraudsters, commonly known as Yahoo boys. Speaking in a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the rapper suggested that the lavish lifestyles of these men have set unrealistic standards, making it increasingly difficult for genuine men to sustain relationships.

According to Erigga, the ostentatious spending habits of Yahoo boys on women have altered societal expectations. “Yahoo boys’ speeding has changed the game. It has made it difficult for other men, who cannot afford such extravagance, to maintain a healthy relationship with women who are already used to the standard set by the fraudsters,” he explained, highlighting how financial displays have begun to overshadow emotional connections in modern romance.

The rapper lamented that authentic love is gradually disappearing, noting that many men now equate their value with the size of their wallets, while some women seek partners primarily for financial security rather than emotional compatibility. “Yahoo boys don kill romance. [Genuine] romance no longer exists. When last did you see two lovers holding hands together in the street? It has been long we saw such. The problem now is that we are raising weak men who feel their entire value is in their pockets,” he stated, pointing to a culture where superficial measures of success have taken precedence over emotional depth.

Erigga further reflected on how relationships in the past were simpler and more meaningful. “Nowadays, relationship is expensive. It used to be meat pie, Mr Biggs Fanta, very affordable back then. And the women were very appreciative. But men also share in the blame, weak men are the ones who set the standards — women took and raised the bars,” he noted, suggesting that the combination of societal pressures and material expectations has reshaped how love is perceived in Nigeria.

While acknowledging these challenges, the rapper urged men to rethink how they engage in relationships, emphasizing that money alone should not define one’s ability to connect with a partner. He encouraged men to develop emotional intelligence and other personal qualities that foster genuine attraction and meaningful bonds. “Men need to understand that money is not the only way to win a woman’s heart. Emotional intelligence, attention, and personal skills can spark more genuine interest than flaunting wealth,” he said.

Erigga’s remarks shed light on the growing transactional nature of modern Nigerian relationships, raising important questions about how cultural and economic factors shape romantic expectations. His perspective resonates with many who feel that the pressures of wealth and social status have overshadowed the simpler, more heartfelt aspects of love that once characterized relationships.

By highlighting the influence of Yahoo boys and the role of weak financial-focused men, Erigga’s observations suggest that rebuilding authentic romance in Nigeria will require both men and women to reassess what they value in a partner. The rapper’s call for emotional depth over material displays underscores a broader cultural conversation about love, relationships, and societal priorities in contemporary Nigeria.
