Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, a move aimed at strengthening and modernising the state’s sports sector.
The appointment was officially announced by the Osun State Government on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, as part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate sports in the state and create opportunities for young athletes and sports enthusiasts.
According to the government statement, Davido’s primary responsibility will be to mobilise resources and support initiatives that will enhance the development and modernisation of sports facilities across Osun. The state government emphasised that the appointment aligns with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure and providing more platforms for youth engagement.
Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, who also serves as the state’s Commissioner for Sports, confirmed that Davido accepted the appointment with enthusiasm and was eager to contribute to the development of sports in Osun State.
“The ongoing rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium to meet Olympic standards will be completed in the shortest possible time. We are also finalising plans to establish the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as the central body for sports development and policy implementation,” Adewusi said, highlighting the government’s ongoing projects to strengthen the sports ecosystem.
He also explained that the newly established Sports Trust Fund, chaired by Davido, is designed to attract funding and investments from philanthropists, sports enthusiasts, and other stakeholders both within and outside the state. The fund aims to provide sustainable financing to support sports initiatives, from infrastructure upgrades to talent development programs.
“Davido’s involvement is expected to attract substantial funds that will significantly impact the growth of sports in Osun,” Adewusi added, noting the singer’s wide influence and appeal both nationally and internationally.
The Osun State Government stressed that this initiative is part of a broader vision to make sports a key driver for youth development, community engagement, and economic growth. With Davido’s leadership, the Sports Trust Fund is expected to mobilise resources more efficiently and create opportunities for young people to thrive in various sports disciplines.
Officials said that besides improving facilities, the government also plans to create structured programs for talent identification, coaching, and sports education. These efforts aim to provide a clear pathway for athletes, ensuring they have access to world-class facilities, professional coaching, and exposure to national and international competitions.
Governor Adeleke’s administration reiterated its commitment to positioning sports as a cornerstone of youth empowerment in Osun, stressing that investments in sports will go hand-in-hand with social and economic development. By leveraging Davido’s popularity and influence, the state hopes to attract greater public interest and private sector participation in sports programs.
