Former U.S. President Barack Obama has paid glowing tribute to Nigerian Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, describing him as a “musical genius” whose art remains a symbol of resistance and truth.

Obama made the remarks in a newly released podcast series titled “Fela Kuti: Fear No Man,” produced by Higher Ground, the media company he co-owns with his wife, Michelle Obama.

The podcast explores Fela’s groundbreaking music, activism, and cultural influence, offering a deep dive into how he used his art to challenge oppression and inspire change.

In a clip shared on his official Instagram page, Obama praised the late icon’s creativity and courage, calling him “a musical genius from Nigeria who fearlessly spoke truth to power.”

He added that Fela’s music held deep personal meaning for him, emphasizing how the Afrobeat pioneer’s sound and message still resonate globally decades after his passing.

Fela Kuti, who died in 1997, remains one of Africa’s most influential and controversial figures. Through his revolutionary Afrobeat sound, he fused traditional African rhythms with jazz, funk, and political commentary to confront corruption and military dictatorship in Nigeria.

His fearless defiance made him both a target of government crackdowns and a hero to millions who saw him as the voice of the oppressed.

The “Fear No Man” podcast, according to Obama, aims to celebrate artists around the world who used their platforms as tools for social justice. Fela’s story stands as a central example of courage and artistic rebellion.

“His music was more than entertainment,” Obama said. “It was a weapon of truth, a call to action, and a reminder that art can change the world.”

Fela’s influence extends far beyond Nigeria. His bold lyrics and infectious rhythms have inspired generations of musicians, activists, and even political leaders across the world.

From global stars like Beyoncé and Burna Boy to grassroots movements demanding accountability, his message of freedom continues to echo across cultures and continents.

Fans across Africa and beyond have applauded Obama for shining a fresh spotlight on one of the continent’s most iconic figures. Many see it as a long-overdue acknowledgment of Fela’s impact on global music and politics.

The podcast is expected to introduce a new generation to Fela’s legacy a reminder that his defiant spirit and social vision are as relevant today as they were decades ago.

By celebrating Fela Kuti’s life and music, Obama underscores how art can transcend borders, inspire change, and speak truth to power. As the podcast title aptly suggests, Fela “feared no man”  and his fearless voice continues to inspire millions around the world.
