Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, better known as AY, has urged Nigerians to stop comparing their lives to what they see on social media, saying much of the content online is staged and far from reality.
In a video shared via his Instagram page on Thursday, the comedian cautioned that social media often portrays a distorted image of success and happiness. He noted that the luxurious lifestyles, exotic vacations, and designer outfits frequently displayed online are, in many cases, not genuine.
AY explained that several influencers and public figures go to great lengths to create the illusion of wealth and affluence, sometimes borrowing clothes or cars to project a glamorous image.
According to him, people need to understand that what they see online is often a carefully curated highlight reel, not the truth.
“Many of these celebrities you envy are living on borrowed wigs, borrowed outfits, and borrowed lifestyles,” AY said.
“Some take pictures in hotel lobbies and call them their new homes, while others pose with cars that don’t belong to them. Social media is like a movie set; not everything you see online is real.”
The comedian likened social media to a stage production where everything is designed to impress the audience, not reflect reality. He emphasized the importance of authenticity and self-contentment over the pressure to measure up to fake standards.
He encouraged his followers to focus on their personal journeys, remain grounded, and grow at their own pace.
AY concluded his message with a reminder that self-worth should never be determined by online appearances.
He said, “People need to stop trying to compete with what they see online. Everyone has their own path and timing. Don’t let someone’s edited highlight reel make you feel less of yourself. Just be real, be patient, and stay true to who you are.”
The actor’s remarks have sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians agreeing that social media has become a major source of pressure and false comparison. Others praised AY for using his platform to promote authenticity and mental balance in a world obsessed with appearances.
