The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) has officially unveiled the nominees for its highly anticipated 21st edition, celebrating outstanding creativity and achievements in African cinema.

The announcement was made at a press event held last weekend at BON Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, drawing top stakeholders and industry figures from across the continent.

The nomination ceremony, hosted by veteran actor and singer Segun Arinze, brought together a host of prominent personalities, including media executive Chris Nwandu, National Film and Video Censors Board Executive Director Shaibu Husseini, and former Lagos Commissioner Steve Ayorinde, who were present to represent the AMAA jury.

Other notable attendees included AMAA board members Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, George Anyiam-Osigwe, Tony Anih, Teco Benson, and celebrated filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen.

Burkina Faso’s Katanga: Dance of The Scorpions emerged as the frontrunner with ten nominations across major categories, while Nigeria’s Lisabi: The Uprising followed closely with seven nominations, solidifying its position as one of the strongest contenders this year.

The Best Actress in a Leading Role category features a rich mix of talent from across Africa. Nigeria’s Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Osas Ighodaro, and Shaffy Bello will be going head-to-head with Rwanda’s Analisa Munyana, South Africa’s Danica De La Ray Jones, Ethiopia’s Getahun Hailu, Florence Mariserena, and Algeria’s Meriem Medjkane for the top honour.

In the Best Actor in a Leading Role category, nominees include Keenan Arrison (The Heart is a Muscle), Debebe Eshetu (For Love, For Land, For Power), Adjetey Anang (Last Stop), Lateef Adedimeji (Lisabi: The Uprising), Ayden Croy (Old Righteous Blues), Bizimana Hussain (Small Gods), Mahamadi Nana (Katanga: Dance of The Scorpions), and Nabil Asli (Algiers).

This year’s Best Film category features eight strong contenders from different regions of the continent — Algiers (Algeria), 3 Cold Dishes (Nigeria), The Heart is a Muscle (South Africa), Small Gods (Uganda), For Love, For Land, For Power (Ethiopia), Katanga: Dance of The Scorpions (Burkina Faso), Last Stop (Ghana), and Lisabi: The Uprising (Nigeria).

Speaking during the announcement, AMAA representatives emphasized the growing global recognition of African storytelling and praised the industry’s resilience.

“The AMAA remains a platform for celebrating African excellence and innovation in filmmaking. Each nomination reflects the passion and creativity that continue to drive our industry forward,” said Shaibu Husseini.

The 21st AMAA ceremony, expected to hold later this year, will honour the continent’s best filmmakers, actors, and technical professionals. With Lisabi and Katanga leading the nominations, anticipation is high among movie enthusiasts to see which production will emerge as Africa’s top film of 2025.
